Found at: Commercial buildings, boiler systems, chemical feed lines, cooling towers, car washes, hospitals, food processing
Low hazard
Double Check Valve Assembly
DCVA / DC
Two independently operating check valves in series. Standard for non-health-hazard applications and fire suppression systems.
Found at: Fire sprinkler systems, commercial buildings, multi-family housing, underground installations
Irrigation
Pressure Vacuum Breaker
PVB
Spring-loaded check valve with an air inlet. Protects against back-siphonage. Must be installed above ground, 12" above the highest outlet.

Why it matters
Why backflow testing is required

Backflow is the reversal of water flow in a plumbing system — pushing contaminated water back into the clean drinking water supply. When pressure drops in a water main due to a break, heavy demand, or firefighting, water can flow backwards through unprotected connections, pulling fertilizers, chemicals, and bacteria directly into your potable water. A properly tested backflow preventer is the only thing that stops it.

MN Plumbing Code — Section 603.4.2 — Annual testing required
"The premise owner or responsible person shall have the backflow prevention assembly tested by a certified backflow assembly tester at the time of installation, repair, or relocation and not less than on an annual schedule thereafter, or more often where required by the Authority Having Jurisdiction."
2015 Minnesota State Plumbing Code, effective January 23, 2016 — MN Rules Part 4714.0603
MN Rules 4714.0603.5.23 — Ongoing testing program
"Testable backflow prevention assemblies shall be installed, tested, maintained, and removed in accordance with sections 603.5.23.1 through 603.5.23.4. The installation of a testable backflow prevention assembly is permitted only when a periodic testing and inspection program conducted by qualified personnel is provided."
Minnesota Department of Health — Cross Connection Control Program Requirements
Tester certification required
"Testing of backflow prevention devices requires certification to ASSE Standard 5110. Testing of reduced pressure principal devices (RPZs) requires an additional certification by the commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry."
2015 MN Plumbing Code Fact Sheet — MN Dept. of Labor and Industry
